Arash Sadeghi and his wife Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee were arrested by security forces on the evening of Saturday, 06 Sep 2014. Arash was released from prison almost one year ago. Arash has been arrested several times by Iranian security forces—the last time he was kept in prison for nearly two years, during which he spent long periods in solitary confinement.
Sadeghi, a human rights activist and former student activist, was arrested at his workplace. During a previous arrest, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence raided Arash Sadeghi’s home at 4AM on 30 Oct 2010 In order to arrest him. Arash’s mother suffered a fatal heart attack as a result of the shock of the raid.
Arash has had extremely difficult experiences in prison—both psychologically and physically . He currently suffers from a broken rib and shoulder as a result of torture inflicted in Ministry of Intelligence detention centers, and he needs effective and urgent medical care, including surgery on his injured shoulder.
More than a year since the beginning of Hassan Rouhani’s presidency, expectations of improvements to the human rights situation in Iran have not been fulfilled. Rather, arrests of citizens on charges that amount to the exercise of their fundamental rights continue, and the number of executions has increased dramatically.
In this context, considering that these people have not carried out any illegal action and Rouhani’s state came to work with promises of "human rights";
--We, the undersigned, condemn the arbitrary detention of Arash Sadeghi & Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee and call for their immediate and unconditional release.
—We request that the international human rights community investigate the cases of prisoners of conscience in in Iran, and especially the cases of Arash Sadeghi & Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee.
